I found this massive piece of driftwood on the Goukamma beach - it was over 5m long. Fortunately I took this photo as a few weeks later I was in the area and was most surprised to see that it had gone! It could only have been taken away by the waves and tides.

A mother cheetah and her two cubs in the golden light of dawn. However there are actually three cubs in this photo - maybe you can spot the third cub in the thicket to the left of his mother!Photographed on Fujichrome Velvia 50 ISO slide film.

Baobabs are the most amazing of all trees. They are so huge they function as an entire ecosystems, supporting many birds and other small animals, not to mention elephants that feed on them. In winter they lose their leaves, but in summer provide much needed leafy shade.

A fisherman and his dog stand alone on a beach. I love this photo - the rich colors, and the detailed patterns formed by wave and water, beach and footprints.

A morning of aerial photography over the Namib Desert in Namibia was utterly fascinating. The orange sand dunes simply go on forever, and the only animals we saw were occasional gemsbok. As we flew home to camp I suddenly noticed this herd dashing below us.Photographed on Fujichrome Velvia 50 ISO slide film.

On a helicopter safari to the Caprivi Strip we flew some way up the mighty Zambezi River. On both sides of this massive river the floodplains were endless and empty, except for a few small homesteads. I watched a man paddle his wooden mokoro and leave it on this small beach.

Zebras trot over a wet Makgadikgadi Pans after a night of heavy rain. I took this photo many years ago in January 2003 on what turned out to be the most prolific photo day of my life. From a helicopter, and side by side with my friend Bobby Haas, we flew over the pans to behold incredible zebra herds and mazes of footprints. This photograph is my best selling art work, both as canvas and paper print.Photographed on Fujichrome Velvia 50 ISO slide film.

Eight ostriches run slowly in the shallow water of the Makgadikgadi Pans. The night before massive thunderstorms had dumped nearly 100 mm of rain, and the next morning there was water everywhere.Photographed on Fujichrome Velvia 50 ISO slide film.
